Ein Sicherungskasten enthält eine Reihe verschiedener Sicherungen, Relais und Dioden zum Schutz der Stromkreise vor Überlastungen oder Kurzschlüssen. Der Sicherungskasten wird direkt von der Batterie gespeist. Die Drähte des Sicherungskastens sind mit den zu schützenden Fahrzeugkomponenten verbunden. Konstruktionsbedingt sind Sicherungen das schwächste Glied in einem elektrischen System. Alle anderen Drähte und Komponenten des elektrischen Systems sind robuster als die schützenden Elemente in Sicherungen. Stattdessen werden die Sicherungen im Sicherungskasten zuallererst beschädigt, wenn der Strom oder die Temperatur so hoch ist, dass der Rest des Systems gefährdet ist.
